Bunnies

Peep and I finally come to an understanding.

“Look, I’m busy.  You should annoy someone else,”  I tell him.

“Peep,” says Peep.  Ulgh.  He disappears.   Well at least he did that.

Annnnnd I haven’t seen him in months.  Life is great.

Then COVID-19 happened.  We go into quarantine.  No more travel.  Indefinitely.  Also Pokin’s sister and husband move in with us.

To stay sane, my bud and I, and the rest of the family go on nightly walks, where we’ve been noticing a LOT of baby bunnies trying to survive out in the wild.

Not my problem!  I think, as we continue our walks.

Then came Pokin’s birthday.

“We got you a surprise,” Pokin’s sister says to her.  “We’d been seeing so many bunnies on our walks, we thought about pets!  And so we got you something!  “Close your eyes and hold out your hand.”

Pokin closes her eyes.  I close my eyes.  A wave of trepidation comes over me.

We open our eyes.  OMG there is bunny on her hand.

“We thought you’d like him!  Surprise!” PoOn said.

They got her a bunny.  Another bunny.

We’re under quarantine right now!  Don’t they know that?!  Who knows where this bunny has been!!  He’s not even wearing a mask!

I take this bunny out for a talk.  I put on my mask.  Gotta stay safe after all.

“Look pal, we follow social distancing rules around here.  In other words, stay far away from me.”

The new bunny stares at me.

In silence.

I stare back.

Oh boy.

It gets worse.

PEEP!  ARGH!

This quarantine is really testing me.  I’m surrounded by a bunnies.  They’ve grown in quantity.  And size.

And I’m locked down in this house.  Somebody help me.

Maybe it’s time to think about my hibearnating options.

Another day, another road trip

My bud’s good friend is getting married in Hood River Oregon, and we’re back on the road again towards the wedding.  I made sure to bring my posse.  Bud, bunny, bot.  Check. Check. Check.

In an effort to avoid our usual route to Oregon (and my least favourite city – Tonopah), we took a route that went through Idaho.  Idaho!  I’ve never been to Idaho!  Maybe it’s cool!

Our first stop was for gas and lunch.  And outside the McDonalds were sculptures of bears.  That’s cool!  Bears are great!

And then we were in Idaho.  I was excited.  I got out for a photo.

My bud wasn’t as excited.  His loss.

Sometime later in the day we finally got to our resting stop for the night.  Boise!  It was dark. There wasn’t much to see.  We tried to go to bed.

And that’s when I realized my bunny’s got a problem.

There we were claiming our bed and getting ready for bed when I hear Peep.

“Peep” he says.

“Nice job.  You found the coffee pot.” I tell Peep.  “Now go to sleep.  Here, you can even have a coffee cup.”

“Peep” he says.  And – he. wouldn’t. stop.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he tried to sneak more coffee in while I was asleep.

We’re going to need to do something about this.  Tomorrow.

I got an Easter bunny

That’s right.  I got a Peep Bunny for Easter.

I’d actually forgotten it was Easter until I overheard Nicholas asking Pokin if she’d gotten me any candy for Easter and I was aghast to hear they hadn’t.

?!?!?  What!!  This is absolutely an Enormous-Easter-Disaster in the making.

As I was feeling all upset about everything and trying to figure out how to sufficiently express my displeasure, I noticed the USPS truck pull up with a package.  A package!  With my name on it!

Forgetting about my Absolutely-Enormous-Easter-Disaster-In-The-Making for the moment, I went to make my bud open the package right away.   And inside, I was excited to find out that my best bear bud’s mom is actually way more thoughtful than my bear bud and she’d sent me a package!

My very own Peep Bunny!  And Easter candy!  Easter-disaster averted!

That said, my bud is still on notice to pick me up some Cadbury chocolate eggs.  And stat.  My Peep bunny and I are in need of more easter goodies.

Visiting Horseshoe Bend in Page Arizona

Today we took a few hour detour to stay in a small town close to the Grand Canyon along the northern border of Arizona.  Along the way I got my first real exposure to the territory of the Navajo Indians.  They own some cool land!  They own a lot of land!

The purpose of our detour was to visit a couple landmarks – Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon.  This is where spontaneous travel bit us a bit in the butt.  Only once we arrived did we learn that Antelope Canyon isn’t exactly open to public, and that you need a Navajo guide and you need to go on a tour to see the canyon.  And of course many of the best tours were already booked up.

Well at least Horseshoe Bend is free to access so we went there first.  It’s a short walk up and then down a sandy hill off the highway.

There it is!

We got there just after sunset to see hordes of tourists lined up along the perimeter to snap photos.  Oh photographers.  I know one too well.

Well I got a look at the bend.  It looked good.  I had my fill.  Unfortunately Pokin didn’t feel the same way so she dragged us all out of bed at 5:15am the next day to this.

It was still so early I actually only woke up when a gust of cold sandy air hit me in the face.  You bet we were grumpy.

Unlike yesterday night where there were over 100 people there, this morning there were only 4 people total.  And one bear.  I wonder why?  BECAUSE THE REST OF HUMANITY IS NOT CRAZY.  At least we got good front row seats.

My best bear bud and I were good sports.  We stayed until the sun came up.

Then we went back to the car to watch bunnies bounce around the hills till Pokin came back.  And of course since there were only two other insane people (also photographers, why am I not surprised???) out there, Pokin made friends with them while they were freezing outdoors with mittens, toques, jackets and tripods.  What a bunch.  Time for some hot cocoa for me back in the hotel!
