Bear in Glacier Bay

I am back on a boat. In Alaska. With my bud.

It’s been a while. Apparently 9 years ago was when I went on the same route as the Titanic from London to Boston.

Despite growing up in the Northwest in the Vancouver Costal Mountains, I’d never been up to Alaska.

Last minute, Pokin’s mom decided she would like to go on a cruise, so my bud, my bud’s work bud Gabe, Pokin, and I hopped on a flight up to Anchorage for a cruise aboard the Majestic Princess down from Whittier Alaska down to Vancouver.

The first days were predictably very wet. No way I was going out anywhere.

Then we got lucky. The day we were supposed to be in Glacier Bay turned out beautiful.

After some time I decided I wanted some ice cream.

Turns out so did the rest of the ship.

Pokin had to wait a long time for my ice cream.

Eventually I got it.

It wasn’t very good.

Thank goodness I didn’t have to do the waiting in line. It took over an hour for her to get this sundae.

But I’m feeling good. Nice to be back in my home turf.

The Work Cruise was Unbelizable

Another year, another cruise. This time it was a work cruise. My bud took Michael, who brought a friend with him. The idea was to work on the newest bingo game, Abradoodle. We also took my bud’s dad and his step mom Jane. Because we stopped in Belize, there were many a Belize pun. Probably too many. Despite the fact we technically stopped at Belize, we didn’t see much of it. Nick’s dad on the other hand, went on a whole visit with some nuns so they had a real sense of the city.

The whole thing was a blur. All I remember is Peep DIDN’T make it on this cruise, and we also stopped in the very touristy stop in Tulum.

Caribbean Cruising

Not long after we came back from Cambodia, we started planning our travels again.  Something about my bud wanting to take his mom on vacation, and a cruise being a good vacation option since it took minimal planning.  Taking the mom on the cruise ended up being taking the mom and the sister on the cruise.  So here we are, a cadre of people, a bud and myself.  On a cruise.

Because my bud’s mom has a thing for Jamaica, we ended up doing a Caribbean cruise.  I’d never been to this part of the world so I didn’t mind!

Day one, we get on the cruise, departing from Fort Lauderdale.

We’re posing for our bon voyage photo on the ship deck when I hear a noise.  Peep!  Peep!! Oh no.  Yep, there’s that bunny.  It’s a cadre of people myself and an unwelcome bunny.  I don’t know how he manages to do it. I try to lock him in the safe but he somehow manages to get out and have coffee. I just don’t even….

Night time entertainment sans Bear Bud

My best bear bud could have been a star.  But he blew it.

Holland America has some partnership with Dancing with the Stars to do Dancing with the Stars at Sea, where they teach you a routine and you compete to win.

So we went.  And Nick and Pokin learned the foxtrot.  They didn’t hurt each other, and were even chosen by the judges to compete.

And then they wussed out.

So I lost my one and only chance to say my best bear bud was a minor celebrity on a cruise. Weak.

Instead we ended up just sitting in the front row to watch the finalists instead.

Not good enough, bear bud.  Show some courage next time.  I would have danced in a flash if they only had partner dancers my size!

Nicholas makes it up to me

I guess Nick got word of my unhappiness over being left behind so on formal night he took me with him as a date.

See that wasn’t so bad.  I’m a very cultured and well behaved bear.

I made him also get me ice cream afterwards for a good measure.

Meet my towel buddies

Agung and Martin made me towel buddies every night.  How nice.  I guess they thought I needed the company since Nick and Pokin LEFT me in the room ALONE every night when they had dinner. Four course meals.  Without me.  I ate their bedtime pillow chocolates in revenge.  That’s right.

Well at least I have towel buddies.

Next port, Puerto Vallarta

New day, new port.  Hola Puerto Vallarta.

I don’t know what I expected of this place aside from beaches and beach resorts.

Resorts: Check.

Well I got all that.  And Walmart.

Apparently Walmart is a popular named bus stop route in Puerto Vallarta.  It’s a BIG DEAL.  So many buses stop there.  And it’s the go-to place for people aboard the cruise ship to stock up on Doritos.  So many people came out of that Walmart with Doritos. Almost makes me want some.

Aren’t we lucky the Walmart was right across from where our boat was docked?

Inconsiderate laundry people

This one time, I was on a cruise boat, waiting with my best bear bud in the sweltering self-serve laundry room because some awful lady left her clothes in the dryer so we couldn’t put our clothes in.

We waited for over 40 minutes before we finally took her laundry out and put it in the laundry basket.

For extra unpleasantness, one of her underwear ended up in our laundry pile.  Ewww.
