At the Las Vegas Game Jam

This weekend my bud and I decided to sponsor our first game jam event.  This fellow that we knew was organizing it, and we all know I’m in full support of more gaming activity in Las Vegas.  It was held at the Reflint experience centre.

Here’s us getting set up.  Donuts?  Check.

Game developers? Check.

Giant banner giving us full credit?  Almost check.  My name wasn’t on it.

Well still, it’s nice to see this type of activity happening in Las Vegas.  I might do it again.

The near miss

It’s travel time – I see bags being packed.  My bud tells me it’s getting married time!  A big trip, I see, as the big suitcases are coming out.  I saw suits, I saw dresses, I saw a lot of sunscreen…I got a little nervous when I saw how much stuff was going into suitcases but I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw the gaming laptop being added to the pile.

I sleuthed a little and saw pics  of where we are headed– we’ll be staying on some cool over water huts.  I’m already imagining  it now – my bud and I, gaming on the deck.  It’s going to be epic.

Everything was packed when Pokin came in :

“Hmm, our LAS to LAX flight is getting delayed.  Right about how, it’s scheduled to arrive after our connecting flight to Tahiti”

Well I’m not ok with that!  I was getting really psyched about our epic overwater gaming vacation!

“Even though our flight’s at 7 we better get to the airport early to see if we can get an earlier flight.  We don’t want to risk it.”

So just like that, our day went from leisurely to frantic.  We throw our stuff in the car and drive on down to the airport.

At the airport, my bud tried to get on an earlier flight.

“I’m sorry sir,” said the gate agent.  You are booked on a fare class that doesn’t permit changes.

“But if we don’t get on an earlier flight, we will miss our wedding,” said Pokin.

“I’ll see what I can do, since it was a delay on our side”.  The gate agent types away on his computer.  “I’m afraid all the flights are full.  The best I can do is put you on standby.”

And so it was 1pm and instead of gaming at home we are sitting at the airport hoping to get on a flight.  Meanwhile, we are getting text message alerts constantly from Delta that our flights are being pushed further and further back.  We see numerous flights leave for LAX but we don’t get to get on.  BOO.

Our standby flight comes.  There are 7 people on standby in front of us.  One by one, they clear the standby guests to board until they stop right before us.

“You gotta be kidding me” I thought.

Everyone boards.  We wait and I glare at the passengers.

Then, luckily they call us.  We get to get on.  They let in a few people after us, and that’s it.

LA here we come!

Back at CES

We made to to CES again this year and I have to say I’m disappointed. 90% of everything here is the same as last year! Where is the innovation? I guess this is a good reminder that even technology moves slow in the physical world.

There was one exhibit that I did approve of. All this talk about drones, this company EHANG is making a crazy full person drone. Now that’s something I could get behind. From the looks of it, my bud and I could just fit inside and go for a ride.

Well, that and the full scale BB8 robot. Nicholas, make me one of these!

Another bathroom???

Nicholas told me he was going to tear up another bathroom. Naturally I don’t approve of the idea, but after seeing the new blinged out bathroom downstairs I decided to help. I’m a helpful bear. Give me that hammer, this is one thing I was MADE for.

Also, Nicholas said he was going to post a picture of Pokin in the new bathtub. I don’t really get it, but here it is.

Really bathtubs are a very unnecessary invention.

Operation home makeover

With the storm over, it’s time to get started!

We sanded banisters.

We installed ceiling fans.

And built custom benches.

We stripped the floor of tile.

That was a lot of work.  And we had to do it all in 48 hours.

Which meant tile demolition way early into the AM.

Thankfully we had nice neighbours who brought us chocolate and coffee to help us stay awake for the job.   Chocolates!  Smart neighbours!  I like them already.

Our new home

Off the boat and on a truck we went.  Time to move to our new home in Las Vegas!  Since we moved into a fixer home, I guess there will be a lot of ripping things out and putting things back together again.  I can do that.  I’m good at being a foreman bear.  Nicholas, pick up the pickaxe!  Let’s rip some stuff up!!

Hmm…maybe we’re going to need to wait out the storm first.  This looks like some really wet weather.

When in Vegas

Apparently for Pokin, Vegas = buffets.

So instead of seeing all the shows we just went to the Bacchanal Buffet in Caesar’s Place in Vegas.

We were going back on the road again soon so we ended up eating at 10:45am.  It was a bit early for my best bear bud and I — especially since they started switching over to lunch foods already by 11:00, but I guess we got lunch for breakfast prices at least.  ($25.95 instead of $35.95)

Bacchanal Buffet is billed as the largest buffet in the world.  There are over 500+ dishes.  We got a quick tour.

I loaded my plate up right away with lots of desserts.  YEAH.

I guess it was too early for Nicholas so he couldn’t eat too much.

Pokin didn’t do too poorly, she filled her plates.

That was kind of fun.  I could have eaten more chocolate cake but I think it was way too much for my best bear bud and he felt a bit ill after.  Given that I weigh 186* and he only weighs 115* I weigh more and can out eat him too!

* if you ignore that one is grams and the other is pounds.  I’m dealing strictly with the numbers here.
