Gators. I saw them.

There’s really no good reason for it, but I’ve kinda always wanted to see gators.  Something about these primitive fossil creatures fascinates me.

We have just finished our cruise and are in Fort Lauderdale for a day, so we head to Everglades National Park to check the gators out.  There’s this nice long path you can bike or walk that follows a long canal where you have pretty good chances of gator sighting.

As we head out on the path, my bud tries to trick me into the bag.  I’m not having it. I win.

I mean, look at all this prime canal water teeming with gators!  I know they are there!

And they were there.  Little gators, big gators, lots of gators.

After seeing two or three, my bud had enough and he made us get back to the car.

I certainly wasn’t done gator-sighting yet so I just made him take us on a boat tour later on to see more gators.

Check this bad-boy gator out.  I wonder how stealthy they are.

That was pretty fun, checking out the gators.

Cayman Islands, Sting Rays, and the Sea Turtle Sanctuary

This morning we’re stopped at the Cayman Islands, and Pokin and I are both excited to head to the turtle sanctuary.

Pokin’s always had a fascination for sea turtles, and me, I’ve always thought it would be fun to ride a sea turtle except for the fact they are mostly underwater. They have flippers like I have paws. We relate.

First, it was time to see some stingrays at Stingray City. It was pretty crowded. They got in with the sting rays. I hung out on the boat.

Next step to the sanctuary! This is one of the few places you can see turtles in all stages of life from eggs to hatchlings to mature turtles. We even got to pick some up. The turtles and I, we got to have some moments. It was great.

The dampness that is Iceland

I’ve been told by many that Iceland is a beautiful place.

I’m sure it is, if I could have seen any of it.

I found Iceland to be really really wet, cloudy and grey.  At least when I was there.  And every time the cruise crew have been there, as I was told.

I tried to tell Nicholas that, really, we were fine and we could just stay in the car.  I could use my imagination and just look at the maps.  I also tried to tell him it was really humiliating to be seen under a pink kitten umbrella.

But he still made us get out and go to even wetter places.  And he tried to say things like it was no more humiliating than walking around carrying a bear.  I’m not quite sure what he meant, but I gave him a smack for good measure.

Here we are dangerously close to the wet explosion of Geysir.

And then dangerously close to the cascading sheets of wetness at Gulfoss.

And then who knows where this is, given the visibility….  I just know it was also wet.

2014-09-07 19.04.41

At least I got to meet another mascot.  I’m still cuter.

2014-09-07 16.40.30

I cheered up a little when we were finally got back, got dry, and I was able to play with my towel buddy pets, today was a turtle.

Ahhhh, being dry.

Cow sheep on Torshvan

Today, we stopped in a small town on the Faroe Islands.  Actually by Faroe Islands standards it’s a pretty big town, but given that I’m a worldly bear having been to many a town in the world, I felt entitled to conclude that Torshvan, pop. 20 000 = a rather itty bitty baby town.

This is the whole town.  See, it really IS rather itty bitty.

2014-09-05 12.12.51

I’d read in the guidebooks that the Faroe Islands have their own kind of sheep — the kind  you get when sheep inbreed amongst themselves for thousands of years (or since the Vikings anyway) without new sheep stock to add diversity.  So I wanted to see some sheep to see how weird they look.

These aren’t sheep.  They’re shaggy cows!

And then the clouds came in.  Okay I’ve seen enough sheep. And then it rained.  And I got wet.   And grumpy.

Nicholas tried to bribe me and cheer me up with a Jolly.

2014-09-05 13.06.21

At which point I explained that calling a drink Jolly doesn’t a jolly bear make.  Hot cocoa and a warm bed on a boat does.

So I got that.

Much better.

Tea for a civilized bear

So we were docked in Portland, UK today.  We heard word that there was a castle to see in the vicinity so we got on a bus to go see it. I wanted ideas for my eventual castle.

This was their idea of a castle.

They wanted £5.  We got back on the bus.

My bud wasn’t impressed.  Neither was I.  We’d seen better in France and in video games.  So we took another bus to Weymouth instead.

Here we found a tea shop.   And being the civilized bear that I am, I indulged in a pot of tea with some scones and clotted cream.

It was no hot cocoa, but it was still satisfactory.

Photo proof my best bear bud can be kind of a jerk

So we’re in Cabo and we decided to walk to the beach.

Upon arrival to said beach I decided that I  wouldn’t partake in sunbathing nor any ocean frolicking. As a spirit bear with already a very lovely golden fur, I didn’t need to get my tan on to look awesome. I also realized it was a devious ploy on Nicholas’ part to force me to take a shower later if I got even a speck of sand or a drop of sea water on myself.

So I tell Nicholas no thanks and I go back inside the backpack for a warm nap when suddenly Nicholas urges me to come out and check out the view – which I oblige — only to see a bird gunning at me full speed.

cabosumi-1

YOU try having that happen and not lose your footing.

So that jerk Nicholas “saves” me by grabbing me by the foot. Then proceeds to leave me hanging there. Literally. For many moments.

cabosumi-2

That was not cool Nicholas. There’s going to be payback.

The cruise life

Here I am on a 7 day Mexican Riviera cruise and so far I’m liking the life of cruising.  I’m hanging out by the hot tubs, watching dolphins on the Lido deck while Nicholas works.

Then every night I get to find out what towel animal it is the attendant have decided to make to keep me company.  I’m cuter.

They even have hot cocoa on tap 24 / 7.  I’m seriously considering becoming a professional cruise mascot.
