Accounting Needs

Today I heard Pokin take a phone call.

“Hello, I’m looking for someone I could speak to about Sumi?”
“What’s this about,” demands Pokin
“This is Valerie from Valerie accounting and I was wondering if I could help Sumi with accounting needs?”
“No, Sumi already has an accountant,”says Pokin.

I do not! Thought I.

I hastily drafted the following message and sent it to Pokin-

Hi Valerie, this is Sumi. I do have big bear accounting needs.  My bear box is constantly getting raided by my bear bud.  What a jerk. I take that money fair and square from his wallet and I have a hard time accounting for all that is stolen back from me.  I also make investments from time to time in his companies, and I’m pretty sure he owes me some dividends from those too. I pay well in hot chocolate and quality video game time if that’s something your interested in. You can read more about how great I am at https://sumibear.me.  I’ve attached a photo of myself with my bear bin for reference.

P.S. I hope your quickbooks skills are as awesome as I am.
If only I could have spoken to Valerie to get her email so I could have sent her this message.  Grrrr.

Bear Ninja calling other Ninjas

My paws smack with deft, swift and deadly accuracy.  I steathily sneak where no bear has gone before.  I soar through the air like a sharp blade of steel.  It’s like I’m a bear ninja.

Pokin found this site, On Camera Audiences, which lets you get tickets to see shows as an audience member for free, and today, I’m waiting in line to watch other ninjas at work – American Ninjas in the American Ninja Warrior finale.

We tried to do this last year too, but got in too late, so this time we weren’t taking chances.  It wasn’t even dark yet and here we were in line with a bunch of other people.

Bit by by, we inched towards the front line.  Check out this banner!  It could be me competing!

After about an hour of waiting, they finally let us in.  They gave us some souvenir wristbands and a security band. Even though you can get tickets in shifts, when you’re in you’re in, and they don’t keep track of who’s still supposed to be there.  So if you end up getting tickets, try not to get the last shift of the day as you might not get in.

Our group was there for the last section of stage 1.  Cool!  We get to see the contestants finish!

And so we sat.

And waited.

And sat.

And realized that being stage 4 meant that you really didn’t get to see a lot of action.

Oh!  Today is filming day for team Ninja Warrior?

Make that really not a lot of action, given that there were only four teams.

Three hours later, well after it got fully dark, we tiredly filtered out of the stadium, having only seen the stunt guys test run the course plus a couple of the actual contestants that made it this far.

I bet I would have wowed the crowd if it were ME doing the course.

Maybe another year.

At least I can say I got to see other ninjas at work.

And hey! Maybe I ended up on TV!

Back at CES

We made to to CES again this year and I have to say I’m disappointed. 90% of everything here is the same as last year! Where is the innovation? I guess this is a good reminder that even technology moves slow in the physical world.

There was one exhibit that I did approve of. All this talk about drones, this company EHANG is making a crazy full person drone. Now that’s something I could get behind. From the looks of it, my bud and I could just fit inside and go for a ride.

Well, that and the full scale BB8 robot. Nicholas, make me one of these!

Annnnd we’re building lego

I had this idea once we were back home again that we would be getting right onto our gaming machines.

Instead I learnt that all the family was already in town, and that gaming would have to wait.

At least the positive was that I got to build a B-Wing space ship featured in a movie that I haven’t yet seen yet.

There’s got to be some positive to that?

I’m good at directing things to be built.

Christmastime!

It’s Christmas!  It’s one of my favourite holidays again!   It’s a strange Christmas though because we had no tree and hardly any Christmas decorations.  But at least we have Christmas gifts!

We’ve been away for a long time so I’m sure my bud must have gotten me some cool game presents to make up for it.

I was in such a good mood I made the effort to 3D print some cool Christmas name tags.  I focused on blinging out the name of the giver.  That’s the important part after all.

And then it was time to open my presents.

First I got Canadian Smarties.  They’re cool.  But I’m already a pretty smart bear.

Then my bud got a bandana.  I took it and put it on.  Looks better on me anyway.

Next I got to the packages that were from my bud.  I can’t wait to see what they are!

STEAM GAME CONTROLLERS! Yesss!  I have more ways to game.  I knew my bud would come through for Christmas.

To the media room, Nicholas!

Operation : Rescue that bunny from himself

Shortly after we arrived to Hong Kong, Peep disappeared.  I didn’t pay much attention to that, and assumed he was off hunting for coffee.

I guess I started getting worried after a few months had passed.  One day I happened to look up and found out that, for some unbeknownst reason, the ridiculous bunny had decided to dangle himself off the ceiling beams.

I eventually realized that the bunny was trying to do a leap of faith into the coffee pot below, but naturally, didn’t think through the logistics before he got himself all tangled up there.

Well he wasn’t bothering anyone up there…so I left him there.

Today we are finally leaving Hong Kong.  So I (reluctantly) told Nicholas that we better rescue the bunny.

“You ready to come down now Peep?”  I ask.

“Peep.” said Peep.

That crazy bunny still wants to do a leap of faith.

“You realize leaps of faith are for experts?  Not everyone can master the jump.” I caution.

“Peep” said Peep.

I sigh.  “Fine, let the bunny do what he wants.”

“1 – 2 — ”

Peep falls to the ground and promptly faceplants himself.

Sigh.  I still don’t know what to do with that bunny.

At least he recovered enough to still have a go at the coffee.

Hiking in Hong Kong : Dragon’s Back Trail

With Nicholas’ friend Daniel in town, I’m being let out of my hotel prison a lot more often than usual.

Today we got to go hiking on one of Hong Kong’s most popular trails, “the Dragon’s Back.”  This trail is on the southeast part of Hong Kong Island, and runs along the top ridge in Hong Kong.  It’s supposed to be scenic and one of Hong Kong’s top 10 trails.

Scenic + Accessible = Hiking at the speed of molasses.

We started off by making sure we had enough energy for the hike.  For Nicholas that meant getting some champagne Chinese milk tea.  It sounds all fancy and has SUCKER written all over it.  It just meant bottles of tea stuck in a bucket of ice at a $10 premium.

Then we took a bus from the MTR station towards the starting point of the trail —

And got in line to wait for the stream of other hikers to move their way along the trail.  We inched forward on the trail at the pace of the slowest hiker till we eventually reached the top of the ridge.

View’s not bad.  I got to see where all the HK rich people lived.

And I saw where the HK paragliders took off from.   This is how humans get to enjoy a taste of what it’s like to fly like me.  This is also where all the curious on-lookers completely halted the slow procession along the trail.

Well, trail was fine.  I’m glad I went so now I can brag to Quatchi that I’ve trekked on the same trail that ever other person in Hong Kong did during the same weekend.
